The Algorithm
The Algorithm: Alfred Milan of Express Wages

In the process of running a successful healthcare business, one of Alfred Milan's employees asked if he could be paid on a daily basis. This opened Milan's eyes to a huge need -- access to earned wages in difficult situations, like a sudden flat tire or an unexpected need for a pediatric doctor visit. After selling the healthcare business, Milan started Express Wages in 2024, becoming the first African-American Fintech company in this space.

Express Wages works with employers to provide Earned Wage Access to their employees. Essentially, Express Wages allows employees to get the money they have earned ahead of the payday schedule, and is a non-predatory alternative to payday lenders and check cashing businesses.

Milan participated in Epicenter's Capital Readiness Accelerator, which allowed him to prepare for larger-scale investment into his company, and also introduced him to further mentors and potential partners in his business.

The Formula for Growth

Milan plugged into Memphis’ growing founder ecosystem through Epicenter Memphis, where he gained access to expert guidance, strategic clarity, and a community of support. In addition to becoming part of the Epicenter family, Milan attributes Express Wage's success to two things: integrity and building the right team.
